How do I rank in ChatGPT?

There is no ranking in ChatGPT. There is being quoted, which is a different job: instead of the page competing to be the best destination, one passage competes to be the most liftable answer to a question.
So what replaces a ranking?
Share of answers. On a fixed set of buyer questions, the measurable outcome is what proportion of answers name you and who gets named instead.
It behaves like share of voice rather than like position one. You can hold a third of answers in a category and never be the only name in any of them.
What actually makes a passage get quoted?
Self-containment, mostly. An engine lifts text it can quote whole, so the answer has to make sense without the paragraph above it.
In practice that means a question-shaped heading, the answer inside the first 30 words under it, sentences under 25 words, and paragraphs that do not run past about 120. Those four alone move most pages.
Does being high in Google help?
It helps and it does not decide it. When an assistant searches the web, it retrieves from results, so being findable still matters.
But retrieval picks passages, not pages. A page ranking fifth with one clean, quotable paragraph is frequently chosen over the page ranking first that buries the same fact mid-sentence.
Can I pay to appear?
Not for the organic answer, and be sceptical of anyone selling it. The engines are adding advertising surfaces separately from the answers themselves, which is a different product from being cited.

Weeks rather than days. A structural fix to a page that is already indexed can appear within a fortnight; a brand new page has to be discovered and trusted first.
Do I need to write more content?
Usually not. Most sites already have the pages and lose on structure: no question headings, no answer in the opening sentence, and paragraphs too long to quote.
Does schema markup make me rank in ChatGPT?
It makes a page easier to parse and it is not a ranking lever. An engine will quote a well-structured page with no schema over a badly written one that has it.
